Dr. S. David Bernstein

PROGRAM DESIGNER AND DIRECTOR

Dr. Bernstein is a Clinical Forensic Psychologist and Licensed Psychologist, who is a specialist in Adult, and Pediatric mental health issues such as; Addiction, Anger, Depression, Anxiety, High Conflict Divorce, Bullying, Dangerousness, Fire Setting, Domestic Violence, Stalking, Abuse, and Neglect. He is a graduate of the Harvard Medical School Postdoctoral Fellowship/Psychological Residency at the Children and the Law Program in the Law and Psychiatry Service of Massachusetts General Hospital, where he held duel appointments at Harvard University School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. While at Harvard, in addition to his forensic work, Dr. Bernstein helped design and co-facilitated the Adolescent Substance Abuse Group and The Adolescent Anger Management Group. Prior to his residency, Dr. Bernstein served as a pre-doctoral intern at Yale University School of Medicine in the Substance Abuse and Treatment Unit, where he co-facilitated the court mandated adolescent substance abuse group.

In addition to his clinical work, while at Yale Dr. Bernstein served as a co-contributor in a pilot study investigating the connection between juvenile aggression and cannabis use. Dr. Bernstein has written two successful treatment programs for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, both with an adolescent substance abuse component.

After completing his residency, Dr. Bernstein accepted a faculty appointment at University of Massachusetts School of Medicine, Child and Family Forensic Center, where he continued to perform high conflict divorce and care and protection assessments and evaluations.

As a nationally recognized Expert Witness/Legal Consultant, Dr. Bernstein is frequently called upon to give his expert opinion in clinical and psycholegal matters involving children, adults, families, schools, corporations, and government agencies.

Dr. Bernstein provides lectures and workshops nationally on clinical and forensic issues. Additionally he is frequently invited by colleges, universities, and training hospitals to give lectures to their students and staff.

Dr. Bernstein's supervision and consultation is sought-out by legal and mental health professionals throughout the United States, as well as public and private colleges and universities, government agencies, and corporations.

Dr. Bernstein has been cited in three published judicial opinions from the Connecticut Superior Court. Two in 2006 and one precedence setting Connecticut Appellate Court decision in 2008 that was published in the Connecticut Law Journal. Additionally, for the last five years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009) in an online reader’s poll of Law Firms, Attorneys, and Judges, conducted by The Connecticut Law Tribune, Dr. Bernstein was voted "The Best Legal Consultant/Expert Witness" in the state of Connecticut.

Dr. Bernstein regularly attends post-doctoral training courses in scientific research in forensic and clinical psychology and psychiatry, with a particular interest in addiction, developmental issues, mood disorders, bullying/peer victimization, domestic violence, stalking, dangerousness assessment, criminal and civil issues, trial consulting, pediatric forensic issues, and corporate and school risk assessment and risk management.

Dr. Bernstein is a full member of the American Psychological Association, APA Division of Addictions (APA Div 50), American Psychology-Law Society (APA Div 41), Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Association, Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, American Society of Trial Consultants, Massachusetts Association of Guardian Ad Litems.
